Self-Portrait
Why can’t you love me for me?
I could just as easily pass away
without you ever truly knowing
what I aspire to be
Instead of being honest you see fit to lie
as I wipe away tears in a mirror
of flaws that standout
Was I never who you wanted to claim
from the start
Or did time erode your thinking
and like minds grew distant as my person
wore on your heart?
Speculating origins
stocking shelves of this emporium
with recycled containers half filled
and half empty
The remedy is influenced by tendencies
so instantly I become my own worse enemy
All the while you refuse to acknowledge
the unique landscape that life has shaped
No more content with being my mate
than the occupancy of a cell
bunking with another type of “mate”
As fate would have it
my view has always been a little off-center
so it is hard to maintain a straight debate
Innate mistakes
that always seems to involve self-damage
beyond a controllable rate
Why can’t you love me for me?
WHY CAN’T YOU LOVE ME FOR ME?
This whole “talking to myself” thing
has got to stop
