    My Stranger the Friend

I close my eyes and see your face
    The details I know not
A ray of light brings smiling grace
To this dream that I have sought
The perils of life tread ever near
Lucks' pendulum swings from bad to worse
Because of you my direction is clear
Forward my bow and steady my course
I feel a whisper inside my heart
"Just butterflies" is what I am told
I know an angel is playing the dervish part
As her eyes converse with my soul
Time between us, the distance to here
This journey could prove to be sore
I call her stranger, I call her friend
I can only pray that she feels more

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
