    La Paloma

You flew into my hands, a sorrowful thing,
I could feel your fluttering heart, a trembling in
          your wings.
As I smoothed your feathers I felt your heart
          grow stronger,
And I knew I could not hold you any longer.

Fly, Paloma Blanca, I offer no resistance,
You must explore your freedom, the beauty of
          your existence.
Although I love you, I can only pray
You'll remember the one who caressed your life,
          and return to me someday.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
