    Five Minutes

Footsteps, rhythm, and cadence across the floor
A log in the fire and it once again leapt
Ignored the dishes (an outstanding chore)
A short reach into the pantry where tea is kept

Pot whistles and I begin to pour
Steam rises caressing my hands and face
Footsteps, rhythm and cadence across the floor
    Trebling cup marks the pace

Punctuation the click of the study door
It’s all music to my inner ear
Ease waltzes in to my core
The one moment strung out so dear

Footsteps, discord, cacophony racing across the floor
Cherubic barbarians are at the gate
Punctuation the click of the study door
A crescendo of tidings to relate

I step into the breach with a languid smile
    Stoically submitting to my fate
I listen and let their tales beguile
When I finish my tea it will be cold and late

I am not a fan of rhyming poems but at times, they read to elementry. That said, I love this poem. You took a single moment and brought life to it. I had to read it a couple times to finally see the picture but when I did, you opened my eyes. Great work.

I want to say what a tea party, but that would be too trivial. This is a wonderful take on rhythm, song, and generally seems harmless until... the cherubic barbarians appear. What an eerie ending. A great imagination at work here and Alice and the white rabbit weren't even invited. Ginga

Poetry is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality.
