Evolution #1

Evolution #1

Survival of the fittest
Is not how we evolved
Because we'd be so different
If danger Nature solved.

We'd all have wings to fly away
From predators and such,
And chlorophyl within our skin--
We'd never eat so much.

We'd be as strong as insects,
Have shells instead of skin---
So hard not even bullets
Could penetrate within.

We'd have a higher temperature
And germs would never grow
To multiply and make us ill
With ailments we all now know.

And if we lost an arm or leg
Like in a shark attack
We'd never have to worry long--
Another would grow back!

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
