Poem Commentary

God is Able to move the hearts of men. When the first settlers arrived, they focussed on rectifying what was affecting their own livelihood - poor job conditions, employee harassment, unsafe job sites at the coal mines, unfair treatment at the meat industry, being passed over for work after lining up for days or weeks without working, being forced to place their young ones into child labor, poverty and little to eat. As soon as some men were able to do better, they became aware of the inhumane treatment of others. The time became ripe for God to 'send them like Moses to let his people free - Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Abraham Lincoln. After this, others saw that being free was not enough, and fought for non-segregation and equal rights - Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and others

THEIR PAST CRIES

Their past cries were for us.
They struggled and suffered for us.
They fought for freedom for us.
Can we "hear" them sigh?

They cried over us,
For a betterment they know not.
They received the whippings,
And labored in their pain.

Their cries went up,
Before the face of the Lord.
Hearts became softened,
And these listened in the "spirt."

In the "spirit" they searched their souls,
Men like Lincoln, Washington, Wilberforce,
King Jr., and Rosa Parks.
They knew us not, but cried.

Predecesors fought to set us free,
Christian and humane others Debated for this too,
In Congress at home and in Parliament abroad.
Later still some non-violently marched for our equality.

Whether North against South,
Or Civil Rights marches,
Their past cries were for our sakes.
Free at last, thank God Almighty we were set free!

400/100 = 2/5 of one of the Lord's Day or 2/5x60 = 24 minutes in one of his Days. (Psalms 90:4; 2 Peter 3:8)

To have great poets there must be great audiences too.

Walt Whitman, American Poet (1819-1892)
