    THE FEARLESS GOD

God, You are fearful for no one—
    Never fearful of anything
The fearful God who is Fearless
The fearsome God who cannot be shocked.

You are fearless, and have never
    Been a respecter of persons—
And never will You ever be

    There’s nothing one can do
    And nothing can ever occur
That will send the jitters to You.

If fire likes it can burn like hell
If rain wills it can flood the world
Nothing, at all, can make You blench.

Earth may quake, and mountain may melt
The devil may spit fire as spit
Nothing, at all, can make You blench.

    No one can intimidate You—
Who can stay when Your anger burns?
The dreaded One by the seashore
Who walks in fire and can’t be burned
And in oceans and can’t be drowned,
God … the fearless but fearsome God!

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

    Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
