    smaller than an atom

    scientist always said that
nothing is smaller than an atom
    everybody always believed that
nothing is as small as an atom
    nobody ever believed that
    if someones heart was broken
that it would be as fine
    as the finest powder
    no one ever believed that
    if someones heart was broken
    it would be smaller than
    the smallest atom

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
