    "Prisoner"

Wrap your lips around a lie.
Behind my smile, a silenced cry.
Your touch , more soothing than "Goodbye".
Be still my heart, I plead.

Your love sedates my tortured soul.
    Addicted, trapped, out of control.
Within your arms, the strength I need.
    My heart proceeds to bleed.

I rant, I writhe, I fall by choice.
My pride's stifled and has no voice...
my former selves... they gasp for breathe and welcome
    the relief of death.

If reality were faced, your love would surely be replaced
    with arrogance, presidense and grace.
But a prisoner I shall stay.

A slave, I am, to this daily dose
of nirvana I feel when your body is close.
And sweet surrender to this fantasy
    will forever rescue me,
    from this empty reality...
You will never belong to me.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
