Pressing Towards the Mark (1)

Down the streets of Texas hills
Stands the bill of destiny,
A head of success and tail of failure
With the rivers of pains and bridge of victory
He start a journey of fate and faith
A destination of success and riches
Along the street stands life
Agreeing with nature’s rebel to conceal him
He with the breastplate of courage
To move through the trails and pains
A helmet of determination
To concentrate on his mark
A war shoe of power
To project him to reach the sky
And a sword of truth
To gain his integrity at the mark
He strikes through to the stark
A mark to my destination
To be the head in nature

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
