    Petition to my Eternal Father

In the rest of morning hour,

fill my heart with tender power,

and to my child’s loving need,

let my ways and words pay heed

To my mother fire my warmth

and grant my father hope and strength

and to my bride an open heart.

Let me not her failings chart

To you eternal Father a single song,

sung above heights of mortal strains,

till all my soul disdains the wrong,

and only love for you remains.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
