Art and Essence

Art and Essence

Dr. Ron Galloway

Can a poet speak in detail?

Only the detail that is art

For art cannot speak to hidden Watergates

But to the essence of all Watergates.-

Nor can a poet say which policy is best

Be it finance, or the hurriedness of  Cain.

To slaughter Abel and his flock

To purchase credit cards divine.

For behind all credit cards and Watergates.

Beyond the place of pointed blame

Are human hearts and unseen power

And here the poet plies  his trade.

He speaks of the aged and the ageless

Or he has not poetry or art.

For temporality has no art.

But is the open throat that voiceless is.

It opens up in beauty or in ugliness

But has no beauty or ugliness.

Only the ageless has beauty

Shown to the eyes of art in reflections.

Reflections all of God and of humanity

In the day of transfiguration.

The poet crafts beyond the open throat

He must sound the voice- or art is lost.

wow...love this one...you have great understanding of art...it's a revelation to me..Great! ^_^ v

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
