On The Run

On The Run

I've run all my life,
To get away from you,
I won't go to sleep,
Because I know you'll find me,
And when I wake up,
You'll be there.

I've hid all day long,
Still you find a way,
I don't know how,
But you do.

My family and friends,
Moved on,
Yet I still think of them each day.

I've hidden in alleys,
I've hidden in stores,
Yet you found me.

I've run all day long,
And hidden everywhere,
But you still see me.

I've finally given up,
And you still catch up,
And whisper,
"You can run, but I'll always find you."

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
