On Capturing Thought

Poem Commentary

I hate when a thought springs to life and, rather than staying around to be contemplated, runs off on its own.

On Capturing Thought

Wistful, wisp-like sprite of mind
Dancing hither and yon
Thought plays its game of hide and seek
First here, then there, then gone.

This thought which runs a merry chase
Abandoned me mid-stream
To flit and flurry at the tip of my mind
Forgetting we once were a team

I try to give chase to this maddening thought
To complete what I wanted to say
I catch it and hold dearly for my life
Only to have it slip away.

"Enough is too much!" I chastice the thought,
"Return now or we are through!"
As a scolded child, it returns head bowed low
And I remember, I was thinking of you.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.
