Bade by my Angel

Poem Commentary

A girlfriend of mine, as I was leaving to watch my son's football practice, told me to "find pleasure in the evening." So I did and this is what I found.

Bade by my Angel

I am bade by my Angel

That an evening of pleasure be found.

At her behest I must yield

For in her eyes I am bound.

Thus I must find my evenings pleasure.

In our parting I take with me

The soft touch of a single finger.

And in the sweet smell of her hair

Do I find my thoughts linger.

Here do I find one evenings treasure.

I sit in the darkness and watch

My son perched ‘pon green field of dreams.

Growing wistful at my youthful loss

Melancholic memories sift through the seams.

Certainly here is an evenings joy.

Voices singing quietly as I stop and ponder

This young version of me that works hard to compete

In his stance and demeanor it is apparent

That my love and pride of him is complete.

Here is the pleasure I find in my boy.

As I stop and consider the affairs of my home

My eyes touch my daughter’s golden hair.

A father’s knowing smile is matched by her own

The love of my child is found waiting there.

Here a treasure as life-giving as water.

In her shines the life of youth

She brings pride in her selfless giving.

I see in her both woman and child

And that makes my life worth living.

Here is the pleasure I find in my daughter.

The evening fades and I am left alone

With the thoughts of my angel’s request.

I have looked and found those evenings pleasures

Completing her impassioned behest.

And yet there is one pleasure I miss

In the touch of her finger and warmth of her kiss.
