My Experience with Death
I lie here with
A hole in my lung
From a bullet wound.
It’s hard for me to
Keep breathing, it hurts.
I’m trying to figure
Out what it is that
I did to get shot.
My life starts to
Flash before my eyes.
The memories of all
The things I ever accomplished,
Of all the things that
I will never accomplish.
Something changes.
I’m no longer looking up,
But instead I’m looking
Down on my body from above,
And I realize that I must be
Close to death.
I look around and
See you approaching
From a distance.
You’re smiling and laughing.
Then you come upon my
Body and see me lying there,
The color draining
Away from your face.
I watch as you
Scream and drop
To your knees,
Tears streaming down your face.
Other people start to
Show up now.
A man is on the phone.
Everyone is hysterical.
The EMTs show up and
Load my body into
The ambulance and try to revive
My heart beat.
I turn around and
And see a bright light.
I start towards the light
But then I hear your voice calling
My name over and over again.
An angel appears in
Front of me and tells
Me to return,
That it’s not my time to die.
I turn back and return
To my body.
Opening my eyes I smile up at you.
I tell you that I love you and that
It’s not time for me to die yet.
A hole in my lung
From a bullet wound.
It’s hard for me to
Keep breathing, it hurts.
I’m trying to figure
Out what it is that
I did to get shot.
My life starts to
Flash before my eyes.
