    LOVE REMAINS ENIGMA

You look back at me again
    From the stopped-time photo
I snapped of you the morning
Harsh words dribbled from our mouths
    And we threw ourselves away

    Those same turbulent sea-blue eyes
The cresting blond wave of your hair
    Those unsmiling closed lips
    Meant to remind me forever
    Love remains enigma

    Where have you taken yourself
Where do you live now still hiding
    All the myriad personas
You wore like your own thick skin
    Chameleon-like, deceitful

    You will stare that way
    in your picture-perfect pose
Till the proverbial cows come home
Eliciting sorrow from these dark eyes
    That cannot turn away
