FROM THE DEPTHS OF MY COMPLACENCY

I have heard the same call the wild hear
that tries so hard to summon me
from the depths of my complacency
where I sit unashamed as the world
sails by in search of more tempestuous
waters to drawn drown unsuspecting travelers
I have watched the wild and the meek respond
to deceitful promises dressed in fineries
but I do not budge from my seaside chair
where the worst that could befall me are
pesky sand flies or mendicant gulls
or the white spray of dissipating waves

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
