LET'S JUST LEAVE IT TO DIE

Let's just leave it to die the slowest of deaths
so our minds won't know our hearts have left.
No affection, no talking, a gaping rift;
No meaningful kiss has touched our lips.
What brought it about?

You had all you've wanted and so much more,
now your shadow doesn't even reach our door.
I've given more than I thought I could give.
I see so little reason to continue to live
this life turned inside out.

You took a lot out of me, showed so little care.
I didn't stand up for myself, I knew not to dare
such a crazy thing as that.  I wanted to talk
about us, or anything, and off you would walk.
It makes me want to shout.

We've been a couple for a long time now.
To be alone?  I'll figure out how.
When should I go and what should I do?
It's strange to imagine my life without you.
It's just not in me to pout.

What brought it about?
This life turned inside out.
It makes me want to shout.
It's just not in me to pout.
So let's just leave it to die.

A poem inspired by a disappointment in love so severe that the death of that love seemed the only answer. A story poem with much meaning built in and a consistent flow toward the sad conclusion.

I really never thought our marriage would end...I've always believed in "til death do us part", and its the love which has died, though I continually tried, to hold it all together.

Wow, it is hard to address a situation and then choose to just let it die. I feel that it makes you the bigger person, This is a very well written piece and I enjoyed it.

Thank you for the comment. It was as hard to write as it is to live it.

What irony! Inviting him to assist you in leaving it to die. Did you need a final agreement before closure can happen? He left it to die long ago, you were the one feeding it. Save a bit, and then leave for somewhere exciting, or if you prefer, an island of peace in a hectic world. You are more thanyou think you are right now. HIs myopia has dimmed your perceptions. Oh, the poem? Richly textured with creative metaphors that color the edges of an emotional wasteland.

To have great poets there must be great audiences too.

Walt Whitman, American Poet (1819-1892)
