Poem Commentary

I worked closely with Alzheimer's and Dementia participants at a Senior Day program. The bottom line is: Treat me like family!

I'm Still Here

My name is Miss Paula
I'm happy most of the time
As long as you cook my favorite foods
And make sure I stay dry

My name is Miss Kate
I am wheelchair bound
My friends play games and show me
They love having me around

My name is Shelly
I love 50's music and eating sweets
But when the song is over
You'll find me in the corner, fast asleep

They talk in front of us
Like we don't even hear
We may not understand every word
But we still cry human tears

Thats a hard thing to see sometimes, the first time I went to see a lady that was like my second momma but she did not know me anymore. That was breathtaking and it was all I could do not to cry.....

Thank you so much. It's something so deep to my heart. Something that is all around us for sure....we should revere the ones who raised us.

Thank you. I can't explain the love I felt when I was there and the loss I felt when I had to leave.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
