I understand now

I understand now

Outside, above us all, the sun beams on a kingdom of clouds.

It’s hard to believe that there’s beauty above a dreadful existence.

When I was a small child, I took a plane ride.

I remember as we soared up and over the last vapor of clouds into a blue dream searching for heaven.

“It should be here somewhere. Where is heaven?” I remember thinking as I sat glued to my small window.

I was not yet aware of its imperceptible existence.

I realize that’s how we all should be. We should look for heaven as though it is right outside our window, as though it is sensible to our touch if we sought to touch it.

Now I understand the scripture.

We should be innocent about heaven as though we’re children. Truly, we are.

We have never seen or heard of the things that are taking place there.

Therefore, I conclude that we are ignorant.

And our ignorance should serve as the gateway to humiliation and meekness about the Kingdom of God.

Sometimes in our darkest hours, we are able to see as clearly as in daylight.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
