    Honor and Duty

In charge but alone and lost
in the swarm of people that demand my services.
    Part of a couple
yet I alone am active in it.
    Hardworking and over-polite
    an over-achiever in all aspects.
It is but the tenth and here I am
    slumped over my desk and
pouring over next month’s bills and agenda.
    My shoulders are tense
    lower back strained
    and feet tired and achy.
My senses are dull and my thoughts are numb
but for the needs of others.
There is never enough time or money
for all the things they need from me.
My mind is spinning in unimaginable patterns
    but forever clouded by duty.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
