Characterstics of a Father

Poem Commentary

I just wrote this because I'm tired of hearing and seeing so many children go without the caring loving man they deserve, THEIR DAD!!

Characterstics of a Father

Characteristics of a father, which do you possess
Can you really say that you do this the best
Do you love unconditionally your children or yourself
Can your children say the same without your coercing or help
Do your children see you when they first awake and go to sleep
Are you there day and night to soothe their troubled dreams
Or have you left that to their mother to relieve them of their fears
Are you living the good single life while your baby mama wipes away their tears
When was the last time you held your son's hand
Or cheered at his game screaming "That's my little man"
Did you applaud your daughter as she danced her heart out
And dread the day she will become a woman wanting to run about
Are you the type of man who gladly stays thru thick and thin
Without cheating, without leaving, without committing hurtful sins
I'll give it to you, some daddies are not with the mom but living right
They're not letting their babies be a statistic of a fatherless life
I thank you men for being there in times of need
Not leaving your children to do as you please
Characteristics of a real father are simple enough with kids driving you mad
But the reward of being a real father is your child's first word

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
