    Back to You

    I left you.
I got into my car, drove away and I never looked back.
The last thing that you said to me was,
    “I’ll see ya again soon.”
I laughed at your words, denying your facetious claim.
For so long I have suffered because of you.
There were no limits to your vile intentions.
I loved you once…before my eyes were truly opened.
When I saw the ugliness that hid beneath your beauty
I became repulsed by the mere sight of you.
As I traveled down that long road
I felt myself forgetting pieces of you.
I was slowly letting you go with every mile that I passed.
The day was beginning to look so much brighter.
I smiled a smile that was only dreamt,
    never meaning to be experienced.
It was a feeling I couldn’t possibly deserve.
All that I wanted to do
was drive further away from you.
The more I drove the lesser of you I saw.

As I continued my journey I witnessed great wonders.
I’ve seen what you didn’t want me to see.
I’ve been to places that you had told me never to set foot.
Every place I visited welcomed me when I came.
When I left them they said to me,
“Keep going. The next town is even greater than here.”
I traveled eagerly, not caring about leaving.
I understood that there was nothing worth going back to.
I looked for a greater destination.
A place that bears no resemblance to what I left behind.
A place that I had began to call home
although I have never been there.
I had the directions in my lap.
I knew that I was going the right way.
Memories of you began to fade away,
and I had no intentions of retrieving them ever.
Later in my journey I saw someone
lying lifelessly on the side of the road.
The body was covered with a black cloak.
Blood streamed from under the cloak,
making a small pool next to the body.
I pulled over to the roadside, got out of my car
    and rushed to the body.
I called out to whoever it was, hoping to get a response.
    I received none.
I looked closer and saw that the person was in fact breathing.
I picked the person up and returned to my car.
There was room in the front passenger seat
so I sat the person there.
I made my way back to the driver’s seat
    and left the bloody scene
in hopes of finding some help for the wounded.
I drove fast, faster than I have ever driven.
The next town was but a mere thirty miles away.
I felt a hand creeping slowly up my arm as I drove.
A faint voice followed saying, “I…need you.”
    I slowed down a little.
We were still moving, but not as fast as before.
I found myself studying the voice deeply.
I came to the realization that I was tricked.
The voice that I heard was yours.
I wanted to stop but I kept driving.
I didn’t want you in my car,
but I didn’t protest against your presence either.
I heard you say in a soothing tone of voice,
“I can’t live without you. Don’t you still love me?”
    I slowed down even more.
You removed the cloak from over your head
and motioned yourself closer to me.
You gently rubbed my cheek as I drove.
I tried not to look into your deceiving eyes.
You brought your lips closely to my ear and whispered,
“We need each other. Don’t fight it.
You don’t need anything or anyone else.
No one can love you more than I do.”
I felt your other hand groping my shoulder.
“Don’t you remember the fun we had?
The things we did? Don’t you miss it?
I can bring it all back to you.
    I can make you happy.
Everything you saw back there was fake.
I’m real. I’m here for you. I want you.”
Your lips moved to my fully exposed cheek.
You kissed me slowly and repeatedly.
I wanted you to stop, but I made no efforts to stop you.

Finally, I brought the car to a full stop.
I turned the car off completely.
I looked into your eyes…those evil, hypnotic eyes.
You grabbed the back of my head and brought our lips together.
It was wrong, but I didn’t want to stop.
I put my arms around you,
pulling your body closer to mine.
We were in a full embrace, sharing a moment of forbidden pleasure.
The moment only intensified as we carried on.
The kissing was sweet, long, smooth, slow.
I could not tear myself away from you.
In between kisses I heard you say something.
It sounded like you were saying, “Tell me…”
At one point I stopped kissing you
so that I can hear what you wanted to say.
As I slowly brought my head away to look at your face, I became startled.
Your skin had become like that of a reptile.
Your eyes were similar to the eyes of a snake.
I stared at you in horror as you smiled,
bearing fangs and a forked tongue.
You proceeded to speak in a dark voice, saying,
“Tell me that you’ll love me forever!”
At that moment I closed my eyes and shook my head vigorously.
When I opened them I saw that
    your human face had returned.
I stared at you for a moment,
remembering the pain you had already caused me.
I couldn’t stand looking at you anymore, so I got out of the car.
You got out of the car as well and came to me.
Your hand made it’s way to my cheek again as you approached me.
But this time I moved it away.
It was at that moment when I told you
that I couldn’t do this anymore and I wanted you to leave.
You stepped away from me slowly.
You didn’t look at all hurt by my words.
    You were still smiling.
    I couldn’t take another chance
at becoming trapped by your gaze again.

    I left you.
I got into my car, drove away and I never looked back.
The last thing that you said to me was,
    “I’ll see ya again soon.”
