WHEN I THINK BACK OF WHERE I'VE BEEN

WHEN I THINK BACK ON WHERE I'VE BEEN
AND ALL THE THINGS I'VE DONE
I HAVE TO SAY I'M THANKFUL
THAT I HAD TO EXPERIENCE EACH ONE
THROUGH ALL THE THINGS THAT I HAVE LIVED
I HAVE NOT ONE REGRET
THROUGH ALL THE EMOTIONS I HAVE FELT
IT'S MADE ME A STRONGER PERSON YET
MY BIGGEST JOY OF ALL WILL BE
THE DAY I BECAME A MOTHER
FOR I WAS CHOSEN TO BE RESPONSIBLE
FOR THE LIFE AND CARE OF ANOTHER
I WAS A WIFE FOR MANY YEARS
I WAS A BEST FRIEND TOO
THE VOWS I TOOK THAT DAY IN CHURCH
I MEANT AND KEPT THEM TRUE
I WAS A DAUGHTER LONG AGO
TO A MOTHER I NEVER MET
SHE IS IN HEAVEN NOW
WATCHING OVER ME I BET
I WAS A VICTIM TOO YOU KNOW
ONE OF A CRIME THAT ALMOST KILLED ME
BUT I HAVE LEARNED TO FORGIVE
AND NOT LET IT CONTINUE TO DEFEAT ME
FOR THOSE OF YOU OUT THERE
WHO THINK YOU HAVE IT BAD
JUST THINK HOW MUCH WORSE IT COULD HAVE BEEN
IF MY LIFE YOU WOULD'VE HAD
IT'S NOT EASY GETTING UP
IN THE MORNINGS ANYMORE
IT'S NOT EASY THINKING OF
HOW MUCH LONGER I'LL BE HERE FOR
SO WHEN YOU FEEL THERE'S NOTHING LEFT
REACH DEEP INSIDE YOUR SOUL
IT'S IN THAT MOMENT THAT YOU REALIZE
THAT YOU ARE IN CONTROL
ALWAYS DO THOSE LITTLE THINGS
THAT MATTER IN THE END
LEAVE A TRAIL OF GOOD THINGS BEHIND
FOR THE DAY, WHEN YOU THINK BACK OF WHERE YOU'VE BEEN

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
