MY GRANDFATHER, MY HERO

MY GRANDFATHER, MY HERO

THINKING BACK
I STILL CAN SEE HIS FACE
THE MEMORIES THAT HE LEFT ME
ARE THE ONES I STILL EMBRACE

MY GRANDFATHER, MY HERO
HE NEVER LET ME DOWN
HE DID EVERYTHING HE COULD
TO MAKE SURE I NEVER FROWNED

THOUGH I WAS ONLY THREE
WHEN I WENT TO LIVE IN HIS HOME
HE NEVER TREATED ME ANY DIFFERENT
THAN THE KIDS THAT WERE HIS OWN

HE TOOK ME TO THE ICE CREAM SHOP
TWO OR THREE TIMES A WEEK
HE TOOK ME TO THE PARK
AND WE'D PLAY HIDE N SEEK

HE ALWAYS HAD A SMILE ON
DESPITE HIS FAILING HEALTH
SOME SAY HE WAS JUST EVIL
AND ONLY WORRIED ABOUT HIS WEALTH

BUT MY GRANDFATHER WAS DIFFERENT
AT LEAST TO ME THAT IS
I NEVER HAD A WORRY
DURING HIS LIVING DAYS

HE WAS MY PROTECTOR
HE WAS MY FATHER TOO
THOUGH HIS SON WAS MY BIOLOGICAL DAD
HE WAS THE ONLY ONE I KNEW

THEN ONE DAY I CAME HOME
FROM SCHOOL TO FIND HIM GONE
MY GRANDMA SAID HE WAS TOO SICK
AND HE HAD TO MOVE ON

AT THE TENDER AGE OF FIVE
I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND
WHERE HE HAD TO GO
WE HAD SO MANY PLANS

AFTER HE WAS GONE
MY LIFE WAS NOT THE SAME
THE LIFE I HAD WITH GRANDMA
WAS ABUSIVE AND INHUMANE

I CRIED FOR HIM SO MANY NIGHTS
I WANTED HIM TO COME BACK
I MISSED MY GRANDFATHER DEARLY
I MISSED SITTING ON HIS LAP

HE TOLD ME MANY STORIES
WE HAD SO MANY TALKS
WE HAD A ONE OF A KIND BOND
AND WE WENT FOR MANY WALKS

MY GRANDFATHER, MY HERO
I NEVER WILL FORGET
ALL THE LOVE HE GAVE ME
ALL THE EXAMPLES THAT HE SET

HE WAS MY GUARDIAN ANGEL
HE WAS MY BEST FRIEND TOO
MY GRANDFATHER, MY HERO
THE ONLY FATHERTHAT I KNEW

Well writen poem I wish I could have known my real grandfather too, that would have been the greatest thing in the world. Sometimes I wonder if the memory of him would have been the same. Great poem

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
