    Poem Commentary

When a husband is told to choose between himself and who his wife wants him to be

    What should I do

    Obligations make you stay
fear of disappointing ones make you stay
love for your kids make you stay
believing you can't do better makes you stay

In the process you lose yourself
You used to love to write
You used to love to talk
You used to love to be with your family
You used to smile and laugh all the time
What happened to what you used to be

You told me my smile looked funny
You told me to get a real job and stop writing
Everytime I talked you didn't listen
    You never liked my family
    You doesn't smile or laugh
    Should I change for you

    I am not happy
    I changed for you
    I live for you
    You control my world
    Will you love me now
    Will you change for me

    Unfourtanetly no you won't
    you will be the same
If you love me than you will do what I say
But am I a man or a puppet
    Do you care which
Do you love me or who you want me to be

You say I don't love you the same
Is that it or have I decided that I need to love me
When I said I do does that mean I don't have the right to be me
I chose you are you sure that you wanted ME

loved this write. I can so relate although from feeling this way as the wife. It's like I'm never good enough, and I lose myself in the image he creates of me. great write. -Tonya

I want to say I enjoyed reading this poem, but the poem is not a happy one so enjoy is the wrong word to use. I really like it though. It reached me because I can relate to this poem. I'm not married and don't have kids but I've had relationships. The position that the couple is in I've been in. It's rough. You're words touched a soft spot. I hope all works out well.

Thank you it feels better to know that I am not the only person who has ever felt this way

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.

    Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) American poet.
