    Watching Me Grow

    The pain in your eyes
    gives it all away.
    You can't hold on,
not even for one more day.

I knew that day, so very long ago,
    was your last.
But I didn't want to admit,
for then you would only be in my past.

I was selfish, that I know.
For I wanted you to stay and watch me grow.
I wanted you to see all that I would be.
But what didn't occur to me
was even though you left this earth,
You would still watch me grow,
Just without all the pain and hurt.

I'm sorry it took me so long to let you go!
And even though I still miss you so
I know, you are watching me grow!

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
