Time

Another year has come and gone,
but what is time but here and now?
And if we truly are here now,
then where are we tomorrow?

And if tomorrow comes and goes
a life that's measured by our woes,
will never see the wonder of
what we are and who we love.

For if we dwell on deeds that passed,
think only of our sorrows,
we'll miss the point of life itself.
Don't waste this day,
it was tomorrow!

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
