I watched this young man coming home exhausted from his day
and oh how hard he must have worked to earn his weekly pay
in the kitchen cooking was his wife so sweet and dear
as kids would rush to greet him "hi daddy" you could hear

I chanced to see this man today, had aged a bit, hair turning grey
helping out a fellow friend, was dark when all the work would end
went home to find the kids had all come in from out of state
conversation at the table till Mom said "it's getting late"

I saw a saddened man today that left me oh so shaken
God had made a calling and his sweet dear wife was taken
his world turned upside down and life in sudden disarray
he took it on with courage step by step and day by day

I happened to see this man today who's age I can't determine
but eyes can tell a story, he is surely full of wisdon
his hands are old and calloused and his gait has slowed a bit
works as hard as yesterday, still doesn't like to sit

I sat and listened to this man recite to me a poem
it made me realize how much I really need to know him
we often take for granted that we know our loved ones well
set aside true feelings, these are things we need to tell

I went to see my Grandpa, I'm so glad I got to know him
cherished memories he has given to is grand and great grandchildren
