MEMORIES

Memories are made of things that happen everyday
Moments as we live them, things we do or say
Little bits and pieces of laughter mixed with tears
Paragraphs and pages written through the years
The carefree days of childhood, the growing pains of youth
A few illusions shattered in the endless search for truth
The friendships we remember, mistakes that we regret
The ending of a love affair we never could forget
We can't erase the sadness or edit out the tears
We can't undo the wrongs we've done, we can't relive the years
Yes, memories are happenings, each one a different kind
Each one a separate chapter thats printed in the mind
Since memories keep building, each day can be the start
Of making new and happy ones to store within your heart

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
