The Highway

THE HIGHWAY

By Kevin Degidon

Whoosh! I watch the trucks go by,

While gleaming forth I wonder why,

Life can’t be so sweet and fair,

As the flowing of the morning air.

Where I need not ere run and hide,

By this old highway in the countryside.

Where vehicles rush with breakneck speed,

I imagine where hence they might lead,

To a mythical land where there is no fear,

Oh, to be any place but here,

Back in the strained gravity of life,

Where all is tinged by stress and strife.

But for a golden moment behold of this,

Oh wonder of a tranquil bliss.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
