    Silence

    An air conditioner cooling,
    a clock ticking,
    a reflection in the mirror.

The color gray, a chill breeze,
    crickets chirping on a hot
    Summer's night.

    A movie in slow motion,
    two deaf people communicating,
    a college library before finals.

A smile, a frown, the middle finger,
    waiting for the principal,
    a fire on a cold Winter's night.

Pops on a record before the song,
a snake in the grass gazing
    at prey.

    Sadness, despair, guilt,
    a lie,
    death,
    complete stillness.

    Silence.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
