powerful smile

powerful smile

Invisible people, walking alone;
the shoulder they cry on is always their own.
Hearts filled with sorrow and eyes filled with tears,
with no-0ne to help them oe help ease their fears

Though others surround them, so lonely they feel.
Depression descends and its darkness seems real.
A smile from a stranger, a call from a friend
may be all that is needed to help a heart mend.

But how many people do I see each day
and rather than helping, I just walk away?
How many times do I just take the time
to think about problems that really aren't mine?

Have I been as helpful as I could have been?
Do I really listen? Am I a true friend?
Have I been too stingy with smiles that are free
just because nobody's smiling at me?

Maybe if I smile then others will too,
and maybe then someone will not feel so blue.
Maybe a kindness as small as a smile
could make someone's life feel like less of a trial.

If something so simple, so pure and so sweet
were given to everyone out on the street
Then maybe a husband would smile at his wife,
or maybe a smile could help change someone's life.

You do have a beautiful smile use it every chance you get.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
