PEACEFULLY POLITE: Hopi'sinom

“People Who Live in the Correct Way”—try
To know respect—to hold sacred—to awe;
To be uncritical, to not ask why.

Some can draw on deep thoughts within— that’s why
And that’s how— they make sense of right and wrong;
“People Who Live in the Correct Way”—try.

Stirred up by their Creator they rely
On deep rooted spiritual wisdom
To be uncritical, to not ask why.

Customs built by habit will never die
They become traditional knowledge as
“People Who Live in the Correct Way”—try

Revere and respect are battle cries—
To love more—to be at peace with all things;
To be uncritical, to not ask why.

Caretaker of Earth has a magic eye
On acts that spread good throughout the whole world.
“People Who Live in the Correct Way”—try
To be uncritical, to not ask why.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
