My Backbone

My Backbone

There was a time in my life when I gave up hope
You held me by the hand and told me how to cope
With all the heartaches and undescribable feelings
It was you and only you that knew how I wasn't dealing
Despite of the tone in my voice and how much I laughed
This is how I was dealing with pain caused from my better half
You saw right through all of the excuses
But hiding the shame is what I'm use to
You reassured me that I was a stronger woman
And there was no chance you would let a man take me under
You told me to give it time and let my wounds heal
That's when I knew my soul would live

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
