Poem Commentary

My best friend inspired me.

Mask

Everyday we must wear a mask
to protect, to provide, to comfort
because we don't want loved ones to worry
because we think our emotions would not be
accepted
because we simply want to be left

We smile at those we despise
cry to get our way
all the worlds a stage
and we use it to the best of our ability

Because we know something bad would happen
if we let those ugly emotions run free
if we let our hate, madness, and despair
show to those we both love and despise

We would be pitied
hated
kept out of everything
shunned and
isolated

And for that single purpose
we  wear the mask
to hide our mouth
our eyes
our face
and our emotions

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
