Looking Behind

Looking Behind

I can't regret the days now past,
   Nor wish them all away.
For they have made me who I am
And for that I'm glad today.

My struggles well have taught me
     To softer, kinder be
And darker days have made the sun
    More precious now to me.

I am a bit more merciful,
     A bit more gentle, too,
And more able now to understand
      The pain you're going through.

Because I once felt loneliness
        I thought would never end,
I've grown into a truer and
         More forgiving friend.

My road's not done - I still can see
         A ways to go ahead.
But now I face them hopefully
          Instead of filled with dread.
