Poem Commentary

I was in a doctors office and I was reading an artical about the make a wish fondation. It's a fondation that grants wishes to children with life threatening diseases. I wandered if any child had made that kind of wish and how in the world could somebody answer them if they did.

Last wishes

Does God grant wishes?
I heard a child ask.
Of Course.
Came the answer quickly.

No.
I thought to myself.
If God did.
I would be back in my office,
Making the decisions that keep me
On top.
Not in a hospital
Because my kid as the sniffles.

What if
It's a really,really big wish?
Asked the child.
There is no wish
To big for God
My child.

I snorted.

What is your wish child?
Asked the father.
I want God to make the world
Stop fighting.

I wait to hear the answer.
There is only silence.

I'm going to ask god
When the cancer
Takes me to heaven.

I let my head drop back against my seat
As tears ran silently down my face.
I had to know
What would the father say.
What could he say to this child.
I turned my head
Only to find my tears
Reflected too
In the fathers eye.
But a smile
On his face.

When the world
Is so full of people
Making the same wish
The wish is not so big.
Make your wish.
Said the father.

So I did.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.
