If Only

If Only

She's with him all the time. The love and adoration written clearly on her face. He either refuses to acknowledge it or has no clue. She is much too timid to tell him the secrets of her heart. So they remain just that, secrets, locked in her heart forever. Until one day she explodes with feeling and angrily tells him in graphic detail how she has dreamed of him night after night and how in her dreams he comes to her in bed. Her voice fades to nothing as she notices that he stares at her shocked and speechless. She wants to take back everything she has said and tries to explain it all as a joke, that is, until he finally tells her that he feels the same way about her. She snaps out of her daydream as the bell rings, stares over at him, and wishes that things like that would happen in real life. "If only", she thinks, and meets up with him to walk to their next class, still too timid to reveal her feelings.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
