    I REMEMBER

    Riding in the APC
    I remember us joking
Things seemed fine the day nearly done
Heading back to our safe corner of the desert
We laughed as we rode along
    Jimmy singing some stupid song
    Charlie singing the harmony
    Everything thing seemed fine
Those were the last clear thoughts in my mind that day
But then I heard the explosion
    Then I felt us roll
    Then the screams an IED
Charlie laid in a pool of blood
His right leg gone now only a stub
Jimmy grabbing what was once his eye
The rest of us running to help
    Tears in our eyes
    I remember that day
    Like its happening now
Men I came to know as my brothers
    I ask myself how
    How can this happen
    Four weeks from going home
Now they want me to see a doctor
To deal with the horrors of war
    How will it help
When all I can do is Remember
