Poem Commentary

I wrote this poem after visiting a dying relative in the hospital and began to realise just how much pain he had spread across our family. The idea of the echo was given to me from a follower on twitter: @musicasoulblog and I posted it on my blog: www.lyricsofamusicalsoul.blogspot.com This is one of those poems that becomes almost therapeutic.

Echo

Soon your name will be just an echo,
your body will lie with the lost souls,
yet your memories will continue to linger,
and they won't make us happy.

For your life on earth is filled with such pain,
not only for you - for us too,
and with every breath you take,
you pull us closer to the edge of darkness.

Even when your name just echos I know it won't end,
now each of us has a scar which you engraved,
so your freedom will push us deeper down,
and, like in life, you will be so unaware.

I can only hope that before your pulled away,
you will open your eyes to the sadness you've spread -
so evenly, across this family,
and perhaps whisper words of regret.

But we know this is not to happen,
so we sit, unmoved by your new stage of illness,
once again hoping for the echo of your name,
an echo that will soothe our everlasting pain.

Sad and very emotional write, hope the individual restores healing to the family...
