Poem Commentary

I love you, Caretaker,
Lora Renee Goodnight
For Chris Goodnight my husband & their Daddy/Papa/Caretaker
November 15, 2007 (A poem for his Birthday)

Though he has never "fathered" a child, he has been a daddy, provider, and rock for his step-daughters, adopted daughters and foster daughters.

Caretaker of Many; Father of None

Caretaker of Many; Father of none

From the seeds he has scattered no blossoms came.
Inside him beats the heart of a Daddy, just the same.
A caretaker of many; a father of none.
A caretaker in a garden planted by God’s Son.
Jesus knows His garden needs tender loving care,
The seed and the soil, He will prepare.

A divorced women, two girls of her own
Two blossoms needing a father, a home.
A past marriage gone cold as snow in December.
Four winter blossoms his love and care remember.
Step-father to six blossoms; to his heart they lay claim.
A caretaker, a father; the heart is the same.

The garden needs care, no matter who scattered the seeds.
A father who will nurture, encourage, pull weeds.
Now upon the caretaker’s heart a new garden is laid.
Seed again not his, a garden Jesus has made.
A home for children whose lives have gone wrong.
Precious blossoms to love and make strong.
The seed of other’s placed in his care,
A harvest for Jesus and the caretaker to share.

A caretaker of many; a father of none.
Blossoms who call him Daddy; A man God calls son.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.
