butterfly bruises

butterfly bruises

blue, black, purple ink

spread across and under the skin

flutter and flicker under the eye

spreading wings across the ribs,

lead down to the hips like a  stream

golden yellow, faded green on the cheek and chin

five little ones float on  the arm kissing the spaces between

on the legs just a tad bit red as autumns fire leafs

oh! those beautiful butterfly bruises

kiss the lips, the eyes, the noes

these butterfly bruises are our secret alone.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
