Brighten the corner where you are

We cannot all be famous,
Or be listed in who's who.
But every person great or small,
Has an important work to do.

For even if the big celebrity,
In thier world of fame and praise.
Could brighten up thier corner,
In any undistinguished way.
Would be doing the work that God assigned,
Unimportant as it seems.

That makes our task outstanding,
And brings reality to our dreams.
So at the spot God placed you,
Begin to do at once,
Little things to brighten up,
The lives surrounding you.

For if everybody brightened up,
The spot on which they're standing,
By being more considerate
and a little less demanding
The dark old world would very soon,
Eclipse the evening star.

If everyone brightend up,
The corner whre they are

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
