What Could Have Been

What could have been is not what should have been. If it were then it would have been. This is all there is and all there ever will be. This will be a memory that from time to time will resurface and for a brief moment it will be a glimpse into the past. In time this too will fade and the memory will be no more.

A shadow of the man I could have been caught by a gust of wind. Now I’m trapped between what lies aside from the truth and this dream finally realized.

Broken pieces left of fragments from my shattered imaginings in a realm beyond belief perceived to be something else not just these other lies trapped between the truth and my endless dreams.

Awaken me want you please I’m too tired to get up from this silent slumber haunting me.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
