Trapped in sorrow

Trapped in sorrow

I've tried to keep busy and work all day
But nothing keeps the pain away
sometimes I drift out to sea
The tears of sorrow keep calling me

I hear their voices calling out
I feel their fears and their doubt
I see the sadness and the pain
The blood it pours like a heavy rain

The cuts are deep, they can not heal
a knife digs in, the skin it peels
The flesh is ripped, and torn away
Do I run, or do I stay

Like hell this sea is burning hot
All my happiness is soon forgot
Misery grows from deep within
Sorrow is my only friend

Now that I'm here, I can not die
Depression is the label for my life
They look at me, they don't understand
Why I don't reach out to take their hand

Judgement and confusion fills their eyes
They are quick to leave, to say good-bye
Why don't they just simply stay
Why don't they sit with me to pray

They think I drifted out to sea
to gain their pity and sympathy
I came here not because I belong
I came to try and help you move on

What good are soul mates, when they are apart
I made a promise, I gave you my heart
I will be with you, through thick and through thin
To love and cherish you until the very end

I understand this grief and pain you can not bare
Though you don't remember me I want to be there
I thought losing our child was more than enough
But I can't lose you too, I can't give up

It wasn't our fault, no ones to blame
But you can't accept that & its drove you insane
So I came here to save you from yourself
Without you I have nothing left

If I have to join you
that is what I'll do
Perhaps you will realize, perhaps you will see
That I'm also drifting, and only you can save me.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
