To Ruby
A Song Lyric
by Sheila King
1. An old woman walks up and down the halls
A bright yellow star stitched neat on her shirt
“Can you help me find my room?” she asks.
Poor soul. So thin, so lost and so hurt...
Go home Ruby I told you before
You live in the room with red on the door.
2, Thinking to find some memory saved
I speak of the “craft” and the star that’s engraved
And the “Book of Shadows” (I did it to tease)
She turned those hungry eyes on me....
Go home Ruby I told you before
You live in the room with red on the door.
3. She turned to leave , but then she speaks
In a voice that makes my blood run still
“He who eats from that book,”
"Will be," says she, “... never filled.”
Go home Ruby I told you before
You live in the room with red on the door.
(Bridge to end)
Shadows lengthen all the days of our lives
Stories unwritten, told in a moment
through somebody’s eyes
Go home, Ruby, I’ve told you before
You live in the room with red on the door.
