To My Child
I cry and you’re confused
and even angry with my tears.
Oh child you think you know me.
To you I’ve always been the same,
uncomplicated in your eyes.
I am one thing, your mother.
Understanding usually,
and sometimes even wise.
But child I am a person too,
full of tears and still unsure
about the rightness of my plans.
Don’t let it disappoint you so.
Allow me to be who I am,
like any other child of man.
I try to do the best thing
but fall short many times.
And when I do just like you,
I’m sometimes angry and confused and feel
the need to cry.
and even angry with my tears.
Oh child you think you know me.
To you I’ve always been the same,
uncomplicated in your eyes.
I am one thing, your mother.
Understanding usually,
and sometimes even wise.
But child I am a person too,
full of tears and still unsure
about the rightness of my plans.
Don’t let it disappoint you so.
Allow me to be who I am,
like any other child of man.
I try to do the best thing
but fall short many times.
And when I do just like you,
I’m sometimes angry and confused and feel
the need to cry.
