    You measure a life
    Not with money or fame
    You look at the person
    And what they became.
    So when history
    Does look upon you
It will see the vast riches
    Of all that you do.
    The kindness you’ve brought
    Into many a soul
    Will forever be remembered,
    By those you made whole.
    A profession you chose
To bring life to the young
    Became a new calling
to help those cancer had stung.
    It is that very thing
    Which defines you to us
    Showing the world
Why it is you that we trust.
    You cherish each life
As if it were your own
And in each patient you touch
    Your perseverance is thrown.
    A new dream you create
With each life that you save
    Your strength carries through
To make all of us brave.
    You act with honor
    As each challenge you face
    And remain always calm
As you run each life’s race
    Your integrity is only
    Second to none
    That is clearly why
So many battles have been won.
    Now you must go
Time to yourself to be had
    Our time spent with you
For which we’ll always be glad.
    Never change the way
    You accept each climb
And never let the size of the mountain
    Distract from your time.
    The sun will never set
    On the friendships you’ve made
    Because someone like you
In a life you don’t trade.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
